If you want to save money, it is important to understand the license types available in the new Microsoft Dynamics 365.
The primary licensing model is a subscription by named user. (There are also device licenses, which is the topic for another post). The two license types we will discuss in Microsoft Dynamics 365 are “Full User” and “Team Member User”.
Full users are people who want to use a full range of functionality. For example, sales people, customer service reps, finance professionals, supply chain managers etc… Perhaps you have referred to these people as “Power Users” or “Pro Users”. In Microsoft Dynamics 365 they can be licensed for an individual application (aka module) such as Sales, Field Service, Project Service Automation, Customer Service. Or they can be licensed on a Plan, which gives them full access to ALL of these applications.
Team Member Users are “light users”. These are people who consume data or reports (read only), and complete light tasks like time/expense entry or updates to HR records.
Of course, Team user licenses are much less expensive. By using them strategically you can allow more people within your organization to use and benefit from your data.
It’s important to ask, what can full users and team member users do in Microsoft Dynamics 365?
So let’s dig into a little more detail on each license type.
UPDATE:
Note: As of May 1, 2017 Team Members tiers are being consolidated to a new single price point in Microsoft Dynamics 365. This means ALL Team Member licenses are $8 regardless of the quantity.

Oliver, Yes, Team members can create a record for a custom entity.
This may sound like a silly question, but can a Team License user create a record for a custom entity, or only edit existing records?
Hello, our parent company will be introducing Dynamics 365 later this year but a couple of the Southern California salespeople would like to get started with the Team Member version so we can input contacts, update the accounts with meetings, calls etc. and assign tasks (for ourselves and to others). Is this possible with the Team version? Ideally, we would like to integrate our data to the company version of Dynamics when they launch it. The parent company has over 50,000 employees.
Thank you!
Dave Warren
You can certainly use the Team Member license to perform the actions you mentioned. There is a new May internal use rights document that outlines the team member license in more detail. Feel free to send me an email ([email protected]) and I’ll be happy to send it and answer any questions you may have.
Formerly known as Axapta, Microsoft Dynamics 365 is a powerful purpose-built business solution for global enterprises that renders support to industry-specific and other business processes, and also provides a comprehensive, core ERP functionality for financial, Supply chain, production, procurement and sourcing, sales and marketing, project management and accounting, services management, BI and reporting and human resources management
According to the Microsoft Dynamics 365 pricing pagehttps://www.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/pricing the Operations app subscription is $190/user/mo. and Project Services is $95/user/mo. Plan 2 which includes both is $210/user/mo. Note that volume discounts and other promos may be applicable for current CRM Online, Office 365 users and subscribers to competitive products.
I'm going insane trying to figure out how much it would cost to purchase Operations and Project Service Automation only. There are dozens of blog posts about demystifying the licensing structure & costs, but not one answers this question. A bunch of the images show operations as its own a la carte app when describing the purchase options, but not one shows a price for this app. Can it only be purchased as part of a Plan (in this case, Plan 2)? Many thanks!
